3 Greatness Quotes and 1 Nike Video Explain...

Let me ask you a question
that may well have been niggling away at you, at the back of your mind for a very long time. That question: what is greatness? Or, rather, what is your greatness, what does YOUR greatness look like?

Now most will think of greatness as some quality that others possess:

  • Contained in the genius of Beethoven or Einstein or Marie Curie?
  • Or maybe it's athletic prowess as displayed by the likes of Michael Johnson, Babe Ruth or Wilma Rudolph.
  • Or is greatness found in people like (my 'hero') David Bowie, Marlon Brando or Virginia Woolf?

Yes all of these people have greatness in them, but what is greatness as it relates to you? Are you great, even? Can you be great? Is greatness possible for you? One word: yes!...

For me, greatness can be summarised by the following words put into action...

"Each man has only one genuine vocation: to find the way to himself...his task is to discover his own destiny--not an arbitrary one--and live it out wholly and resolutely within himself. Everything else is only a would-be existence, a flight back to the ideals of the masses, conformity, and a fear of one's own inwardness."
-- Herman Hesse

And, of course, these words (and others) combined would lead to many different versions of greatness, I'm sure: achievement, attitude, abundance, allowing, awareness...

Exactly! I believe that we all have greatness - a unique greatness - one that we simply need to allow.

So let me share with you some more greatness quotes to help make my point...

What is greatness - "As human beings, our greatness lies not so much in being able to remake the world – that is the myth of the atomic age – as in being able to remake ourselves" by Gandhi

Greatness Lies In Being Able To Remake Ourselves...

At the very least I'm sure you can articulate how much you have already changed, grown, in this life, how much you have remade yourself.

So what? Everybody does this, you say! Well, just because everybody does a great thing - adapt, evolve, grow - doesn't make it any less great, does it ?

Your ability to change what you are, to continually grow despite the inevitable setbacks any life suffers from, is a mark of your greatness - a seed of greatness, if you will!

And there are many seeds of greatness (just ask Dennis Waitley) but I believe a fundamental aspect of accessing your greatness (and I believe in it, I truly do) lies in...

"If any man seeks for greatness let him forget greatness and ask for truth and he will find both."
-- Horace Mann

...Yes, greatness lies in truth: THE truth!

Now truth is about self-awareness, about knowing Who You Are and who you are not. It comes from understanding and accepting your dark side (shadow) too. And it definitely includes accepting yourself, all that you are.

It is NOT about finding excuses, ever!

Truth is a journey that is ever ongoing, as it takes you deeper and deeper into yourself, and your understanding of the world and your world.

Ask for truth - always! - as Horace Mann urges, and you will receive greatness as your reward.

Of course the journey to truth, to greatness, is a challenging one to say the least...

So What Is Greatness, Then?

"Greatness is a road leading to the unknown."
-- Charles de Gaulle

And that's because it takes us into the unknown and the un-knowable. It takes us into the flight-path, so to speak, of the ultimate unknown, life itself.

The truth is, the present moment is always new, always unknown not matter how much we try to control our lives, our moments - we cannot, we deceive ourselves.

Embracing the present moment, fully, and thus embracing the unknown is a fabulously effective way of allowing our greatness to express itself.

Because make no mistakes, greatness IS about the unknown - about stretching & growing yourself, in the present moment, as much as you humanly can do in this life-time.

This greatness I talk of is a journey that awaits us all, should we choose to accept the full responsibility of it. It's a courageous choice, yes - one that allows us to be big, rather than stay small - but it's a choice nevertheless...

"Never underestimate the power of dreams and the influence of the human spirit. We are all the same in this notion: The potential for greatness lives within each of us."
-- Wilma Rudolph
